Bobby Smith I was born in Rolla, Mo...& raised on a farm in Dent Co, just outside of Salem, Mo.
My Mother taught my siblings and I how to harmonize, and we sang in church & at school functions. Later on, I was hired to sing at funerals. I attended a one room , country school house with all eight grades in one room.! It was there, I discovered the fantastic world of books, and developed my love for the written word. At the age of seven I wrote my first poem, and at age nine I wrote my first song. To date I've written over 200 songs, poetry, & many short stories. There is a book of poetry and short stories, in my future, just waiting to be published, but for now music is my number one focus. Missouri was home to me for many years. I married at the tender age of sixteen, had three children, two sons & a daughter, and we grew up together. I've worked in a bakery, a shirt factory, as a grocery checker, a wig stylist, a furniture store sales person, & in dry cleaning, working my way up to management. Raising my children, and working full time, after a divorce, didn't leave much time for music. I did continue to write songs, writing songs for special occasions, such as anniversaries, weddings, & birthdays. I met and married Larry in 1984. Together we have seen our children married, the passing of both his parents, my mother, my two sisters, and the births of four beautiful grand children. We started planning our early retirement, in the 90's. We downsized our lifestyle, and started saving for our dream. In 1992 we bought a tiny log cabin, nestled in the wooded hills of Arkansas. ( Larry spent his pre-school years in Flippin, so he was coming home.) Every week end we would drive from KC, MO to our little acre of heaven, just outside of Harrison. We would pack our old Buick to the top, with items we needed, to make our little cabin a home. In 1995 we retired and our dream became a reality.
I was inspired by the blissful life in Arkansas, and my love for music and writing surfaced again. I started singing at the Lyric theater in Harrison, plus I bought my first computer and started writing for different e-zines online. Music soon lead me to Yellville, a song writing class, and The Ozark Music Center.
One day while singing at Twin Lakes nursing home, a dear lady ask me if I knew about the Bull Shoals theater. She thought I should be singing there, so I agreed to check it out. After talking to Ed Beam, the chairman of the board in 2004, we agreed on a new plan to bring music to the community. In the summer of 2004, I started the Monday Night Jamboree, along with many musician friends, at the Bull Shoals Theater. Over the next five seasons, we sang, laughed, & cried, together, forming a tight-knit musical family of performers & fans.
In 2009 the Monday Night Jamboree moved to the Bel Arco Resort in Bull Shoals. We are grateful to Katie & Hank, & the dedicated staff, for the warm welcome, as we look forward to many happy seasons to come. Larry & I now call Bull Shoals home. We love the community and have made many dear friends. We still have our little cabin. It's the only good home our Border Collie, OD (outside dog) has known. She came to us abused, and near death. I promised her she could live out her life there, free of pain and worry. Now fifteen years, and nine puppies later, and counting, we have kept that promise.
We also have a Cairn Terrier, named InD (inside dog) or should I say he has us, wrapped around his little paws, and totally spoiled. He's eight years old, and travels between the two homes, laying down the law!
Then there's the two rescued Blue Jays...yes just call me Ellie May...Jayjay is seven years old, and he talks! Yep...he yells out everything we say to InD... and JayBob is one year old, and so far he barks like a dog, does the wolf whistle and a lot of loud squawking!
Larry, and I plan on selling the cabin, and moving to Bull Shoals full time, once OD girl, passes on to meet her maker. I'm already here, but Larry makes the trips back and forth to care for OD... and on this end...me. "Gotta love him!" |
